Duty of the Hour Documentary
With a premiere date of April 20, 2012 in Memphis, a one-hour documentary by the Hooks Institute on the life of its namesake is nearing completion.
Born and raised in Memphis during the era of segregation and Jim Crow, the biographical details of Ben Hooks’s life constitute a fascinating and revelatory film about the African American experience.
The documentary will focus on Hooks’s civil rights activism, and how he shaped governmental policy as the first African American Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission and later as the Executive Director of the NAACP.
The documentary features interviews with President Jimmy Carter, Vernon Jordan (former CEO of the Urban League), Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Benjamin T. Jealous (CEO of the NAACP), local Memphis civil rights activists, and many others.
